I recently won a few writing honors that allowed me to travel and get to know some remarkably creative people. The opportunities for interaction and collaboration with my peers were the true reward.
May 2019 - Selected as one of 20 PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS IN THE ARTS!
In 2018, I was one of 20 writers in the country to be selected as a finalist by the National YoungArts Foundation. At National YoungArts Week in Miami, I rubbed shoulders with filmmakers, dancers, jazz musicians, actors, photographers... an incredible array of talent. Here's a clip of me reading a short excerpt from my novella, Fishbowl.
And here's another excerpt at YoungArts Los Angeles, accompanied by a cool jazz arrangement. Sorry, they asked me to read a particularly gory section of the story.
I was also honored as one of a dozen Californian high school students to receive a 2018 National Council of Teachers of English Writing Award. I also received a Scholastic Art & Writing Gold Medal in the Novel Writing category, which was thrilling because I got to fly to New York City for the award ceremony in... Carnegie Hall. The introductory video was really inspiring, and I almost fell out of my seat when I saw my face on the big screen 20 seconds in...

What I said in the video is what I truly believe: Young peoples' voices are being heard. I want to be one of those voices.
